Blood in Urine (Hematuria): When to See a Urologist

Seeing blood in the urine is frightening, and that fear is useful: it makes people seek help early. The most important message of this article is simple. Even a single episode of blood in the urine deserves a proper urological evaluation, even if it never happens again and even if there is no pain.

Common causes

The red flag: painless, visible blood in the urine in anyone above 40, especially smokers, is bladder or kidney cancer until proven otherwise. Painless bleeding that stops by itself is the most commonly ignored warning sign, precisely because it stops. Do not wait for a second episode.

What will the urologist do?

Evaluation is straightforward and mostly painless:

If the cause is an infection or a stone, treatment is usually simple and curative. If a tumour is found, finding it at this early, bleeding-but-small stage is exactly what makes cure rates high. Bladder tumours detected early can often be removed endoscopically (TURBT) without any external cut.
